• Understand stated and unstated goals, constraints, and concerns
• Determine the data available for informing the decision, the difficulties to be expected in accessing the data, and the extent to which it can be relied upon
• Estimate the potential, if any, for improvement
• Select an appropriate decision support or process analysis technique, or develop a new one
• Build a quantitative model using optimization and/or simulation capabilities as needed
• Retrieve data, process it, exclude or correct incorrect data, and if appropriate, design and build a datamart for it
• Embed the data into the model
• Apply the model to evaluate suggested alternatives and identify new alternatives
• Provide management and stakeholders with the information or potential solutions uncovered by the analysis
• If appropriate, design and develop systems to support distributed decision making
